Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, greeted the first baby born in Abuja in 2024 on January 1.

Her spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, shared in a statement that the First Lady visited the National Hospital in Abuja. During her visit, she emphasized the importance of expectant mothers prioritizing their health and knowing their HIV/AIDS status to prevent the transmission of the disease to their children.

The First Lady also called on well-meaning Nigerians to collaborate with the government in adopting hospitals and wards to enhance healthcare delivery, acknowledging that government efforts alone may not be sufficient. In her own words, Oluremi Tinubu encouraged nursing mothers to ensure proper care for their babies, including timely immunization, exclusive breastfeeding, and providing nutritious weaning food for healthy brain development.

Additionally, she urged expectant mothers to take antenatal and postnatal care seriously, maintain hygiene at home, space their births, register their babies with the National Population Commission (NPC), and enroll them in school at the appropriate age.

The initial baby, named Boluwatife Johnson, arrived at 12:03 a.m. Following her visit to the newborn, Boluwatife Johnson, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, extended her visit to other recently born babies at the hospital. During her rounds, she brought gifts and encountered a pair of conjoined twins.

Oluremi Tinubu, in conversation with the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, conveyed the readiness of her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), to assist and support the surgery needed to separate the conjoined twins.
